Raja Nong Chik pleased with improvement made at Puduraya terminal

FEDERAL Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the newly-upgraded Puduraya Terminal is much better than the one in New York.

Nong Chik, who visited New York recently, had the opportunity to use the city’s transport terminal and finds the Puduraya Terminal superior.

“The people have to love the facilities here and change their attitude about Puduraya. Do not treat the Puduraya of today as you did the Puduraya of yesterday,’’ he said.

Nong Chik, who made his first working visit to the terminal on Thursday after it was opened to the public on April 16, said he was pleased with the progress of the terminal.

The minister commended UDA Holdings Berhad for the improvements, especially in terms of passengers’ convenience and comfort.

“I was also told the terminal’s surau, which can accommodate 600 people now, has been given the go ahead from Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department (Jawi) to conduct Friday prayers soon,’’ he said.

UDA Holdings managing director Datuk Jaafar Abu Hassan said the management was working together with the traders at the terminal to iron out problems relating to high rental and matters like lack of business at the food court on the 4th floor.

“We are talking to them and will look into their grouses,’’ he said.

Puduraya terminal was opened in 1976 by the late Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn.

It underwent a massive upgrade following a directive from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who visited the terminal during one of his walkabouts last year.

It caters to all inter-city buses and north-bound express buses.

Hentian Puduraya Beroperasi 16 April Ini

Puduraya Bus Terminal Opens On April 16

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) — The scheduled re-opening of the Puduraya bus terminal on March 1 has to be postponed to April 16 as upgrading works at the premises have yet to complete.

As such, the temporary bus terminal at Bukit Jalil will continue to be operational for the time being, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said Friday.

He said the decision was made following a discussion with UDA Holdings Berhad, which is the developer of the Puduraya Terminal, and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) Friday.

“Facilities at this terminal have to be further improved. I am not satisfied because the ceiling at some places is very low, while the escalator, lift and others have yet to be tested and commissioned,” he told reporters after visiting the Puduraya Terminal here.

He was accompanied by the ministry’s Deputy Secretary-General (Planning and Development) Datuk Bakaruddin Othman, its Deputy Secretary-General (Urban Wellbeing and Management) Datuk Adnan Md Ikhsan and Uda Holdings Berhad managing director Datuk Jaafar Abu Hassan.

Upgrading works at the Puduraya Terminal began in June 2009 at a cost of RM52 million.

Meanwhile, Jaafar said former traders at Puduraya who had moved to Bukit Jalil would be given priority in the allotment of business stalls at the Puduraya Terminal.

“For those who did not move to Bukit Jalil, we will compensate them for their loses in income by exempting them from paying rental for between six and seven months,” he said.

On the Integrated Transportation Terminal-Bandar Tasik Selatan (TBS-BTS) which will be opened on March 1, SPAD general manager and head of state operations and terminal licensing, Fuad Ahmad, said SPAD would cooperate with the Road Transport Department to overcome problems of ticket touts.

Raja Nong Chik: Puduraya upgrading to be completed by year-end

KUALA LUMPUR, Tuesday 24 August 2010 (Bernama) — Upgrading works at the Puduraya bus terminal cannot be completed in time for Hari Raya due to a wrong estimation of the structure and works involved, said Federal Territories and Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin today.

He said once the project had started, the contractor appointed by UDA Holdings realised that more time would be required to complete the upgrading works to ensure it lived up to the expectations and needs of the public.

“UDA Holdings had initially hinted that the project would be completed and used two weeks before Hari Raya Aidilfitri but instead two weeks ago, I received a call from UDA (Holdings) that since the structure needed to be reviewed to include lifts and a number of other inclusions, it will be delayed,” he said.

Due to the recent development, the terminal would only be ready by end of the year as per what was stated in the initial contract, said Raja Nong Chik after handing out Hari Raya contributions of RM300 and dates to 400 low income families registered under the e-kasih programme.

Three ways to cut Puduraya jams

KUALA LUMPUR: A number of steps are being considered to reduce traffic congestion at Puduraya, said Federal Territo-ries Minister Senator Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

“There are three strategic steps, including having waiting areas for buses, taxis and passengers.

“We hope to see results by mid June,” he told reporters after joining a gotong-royong campaign at Jalan Ang Seng yesterday.

Another measure was to introduce online ticketing – a move that would significantly reduce traffic congestion during festivals and school holiday periods.

“We will forward the proposal (online ticketing) to the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board.

“We hope the licensing board can discuss the proposal with bus operators and introduce the online ticketing service soon,” said Raja Nong Chik.

He added several measures were already in place, such as banning ticket touts and closing illegal ticket booths.

Raja Nong Chik said a face lift for Puduraya was also in the pipeline and upgrading works were expected to take between three and six months.

On April 25, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak went on a walkabout to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Puduraya and said he wanted an immediate action plan to reduce traffic congestion in both areas.
