RM1m raised for migrant fire victims
Labuan: The contribution for the Kg Muslim fire victims has reached RM1 million, a statement quoting Federal Territories Minister, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin, stated.
He said RM300,000 came from the Ministry; RM300,000 from the Welfare and Community Department, RM37,000 from the Labuan Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd, the Malay Chamber of Commerce Labuan, the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as the private sectors.
The 2,576 mostly Filipino immigrant fire victims lost their homes in the May 14 incident and are now housed at the Youth and Sports Department Hall.
The Philippine Embassy and a restaurant have also come to the aid of the victims. On Tuesday, the Embassy and Mawilla Yacht Club Restaurant donated RM20,000 worth of food while the Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority (Lofsa) donated RM1,000.
The embassy’s Labuan representative, Norsiah Abdullah, while thanking the contributors, said the gesture would strengthen the relationship between Malaysia and the Philippines.
“We should help them based on humanitarian ground and not by their nationality. All the while, Malaysians have been helping people outside of our country like Afghanistan.
“Now, we have people who lost their homes in our own country, there is no reason for us to leave them alone helplessly,” she said.
